He painted to explore the depths of himself and the human condition. For him, art was a profound form of communication, and art making was a moral act. Born in Latvia in 190

"A painting is not about an experience. It is an experience." -Mark Rothko Born on this day in 1903, Mark Rothko was born Markus Rothkowitz. His family emigrated from Russia in 1913 and settled in Portland, Oregon. In 1923, Rothko moved to New York where he discovered his love of painting. After a long period of stylistic experimentation, Rothko was prompted toward abstraction by the arrival of European avant-gardists during World War II, ultimately resulting in his signature works, consisting o

“This dimensional sensation just roused me out of the depression that I had at that time...and I realized there’s a slight chance that Mark Rothko is going through the same emotional journey as I did.” –Wenxiao Li, a guest assistant at the Museum, shares how seeing Rothko’s work in the Museum galleries helped her navigate the emotions that come with moving to a new country. 1951 was Mark Rothko’s ‘annus mirabilis’ or marvelous year, according to the art historian David Anfam. Rothko’s majestic ‘No. 4 (Two Dominants) [Orange, Plum, Black]’ marked a turning point for the artist, when he began to use layers of pigment to create depth and drama like never before. Painted in 1951 and shown at Betty Parsons Gallery that same year, the painting then appeared at MoMA’s ‘15 Americans’ show in 1952 alongside works by Jackson Pollock and Clyfford Still. 🗣️ Listen to Mark Rothko’s son discuss his father’s painting and the inspiration behind it! This painting depicts two creatures dancing between sea and sky, surrounded by arabesques, spirals, and stripes. The forms “have no direct association with any particular visible experience, but in them one recognizes the principle and passion of organisms,” artist Mark Rothko said. For Rothko, art was “an adventure into an unknown world”; like the Surrealists before him, Rothko looked inward, to his own
